PhotoChecking out at the grocery store has gotten faster and more efficient with the introduction of features like Apple Pay and the simple tap of your credit card. However, the introduction of Amazons One technology will make it even easier.

The new palm payment system means that shoppers wont have to carry a phone, a credit card, or even a wallet into their local Whole Foods. While the Amazon One technology is currently available in 200 Whole Foods stores across the country, Amazon is rolling it out atall locations nationwide. Bythe end of the year, shoppers will simply hold their palm over the Amazon One device at checkout to pay for their order.

Shoppers handprints will be linked to their Amazon accounts, meaning orders will be paid for with the credit card thats on file, and all Prime perks and discounts will go right back to shoppers accounts.

We are always looking for new ways to delight our customers and improve the shopping experience, said Leandro Balbinot, chief technology officer at Whole Foods Market. Since weve introduced Amazon One at Whole Foods Market stores over the past two years, weve seen that customers love the convenience it provides, and were excited to bring Amazon One to all of our customers across the U.S.

How does it work?

Consumers start the enrollment process at home, linking their existing Amazon account to the Amazon One technology. Then, you visit an Amazon One location near you to link your unique handprint to your personal Amazon account.

Unlike a credit card or password, your Amazon One palm signature cant be replicated to impersonate you, the company explains. Amazon One does not use raw palm images to identify a person. Instead, it looks at both palm and underlying vein structure to create a unique numerical, vector representation called a palm signature for identity matching.

Consumers' palm signatures are stored in the AWS Cloud, and they have complete control over when and how often the palm signature is used. Data is never shared with any third-party advertisers or government agencies, the company said.

Amazon One is compatible with all major credit cards MasterCard, American Express, Discover, and Visa as well as several U.S. banks, including Barclays, Bank of America, BECU, Citi, Synchrony, U.S. Bank, Chase, Citizens, PNC Bank, TD Bank, and more.

Palm payment is safe, convenient, and fast

Whole Foods isnt the only retailer adopting Amazon Ones palm payment system.

Earlier this year, Panera Bread became the first national restaurant chain to start using the technology, while Coors Field in Colorado implemented it in lieu of checking ballgame goers IDs when purchasing alcohol.

Whole Foods shoppers can expect to pay with just their handprint at all brick-and-mortar locations by the end of the year.
